Hi folks. I just upgraded from Skype 5.1 to 5.3 and am finding it difficult to add people or send them requests, I am not sure what happened to the note section youcould type in to help job someone's memoryas to who you are. Before I would make a request and it would show up in my contacts list that that person had not shared their contact information with me yet I tried to add one person and didn't obviously do it right this did not come up. I am using Windows 7 if that helps.
How many of us use Skype here?

This needs to be moved. However. You need the current scripts for Skype. You also need to make sure you have it set in screen reader mode. For Skype to work best it needs to be setup properly. Search on the Geeks board and you'll find much information on it. Or just Skype on the boards. It works great.

Hey there,

I'm a fairly new Skype user, but the person who set it up for me (someone who works in the Irish National Council for the Blind as an assistive technology trainer) said the best version of Skype for JAWS is Version 3.8. She had it on a memory stick, but apparently you can find at this website:
www.oldapps.com

I'm using JAWS version 10, so things might be very different for you.
hope this helps a little.
Chris :)

I use skype 3.8 here as well. I don't like the newer skype 5 versions, I think they stink. Also, I'm moving this topic to "geeks are us" as it is more appropriate for this subject matter.

I'm not using win7 but I'm using skype 5.3 and with the latest jaws scripts. it works fine here. basically, changing it into compact mode and in the view menu, checking the accessibility will do the trick.

I quite like Skype 4.2, although I do agree that 3.8 is also a good version. there's no shame in using it if it works for you.

I don't like the lay-out in v. 5.x. I like how things used to be in nice tabs and were easy to navigate. Now, unless there is a setting I'm missing somewhere, listening to voicemails and stuff like that is more complicated. In Windows 7, if you still want to run version 3.8, install the program, and then go to in to your program files, skype, and press alt enter on skype.exe. Then, navigate to the compatibility tab and check run in compatibility mode. Then, choose windows XP sp3 as the last version of windows that worked with it.

if you have skypeTalking, you can manage most everything in skype without even having to go in to the program itself. listening to voicemails, no problem. they have modes to do that. makes me sad that some people refuse to update their software when sometimes it can help solve some problems. the massive skype network crash we had a few weeks ago, skype program bug that was corrected in the latest skype build. not in 3.8.

Refusing to update is one thing, but trying the latest version and then deciding an earlier one works better for you is completely okay in my mind.

3.8 is solid. It is a good version to use, and is Jaws friendly accross the versions. I personally use the latest Skype and like it much, but I have found for some users I set up 3.8 and they are comfortable with it. Some security issues are possible, but for must users these are marginal. It still requires setting up properly however.I incurrage upgrading.

The latest version of skype is pretty sucky with Jaws from what I've seen too, and I've done the whole accessibility thing and switching to compact view. What I hate about it most is when I try to send an IM, even with Jaws's key echo off, it still reads characters and words to me.
If anyone has any suggestions about how I can fix that (without downgrading since I use the vidio conference feature) I'd love to hear it!
